Do you have a hard time finding space in your day to write? Do you want a creative jumpstart to your new year? In this workshop, the goal is to get words on the page and unlock inspiration. In the words of Arthur Ashe, “Start where you are. Use what you have.” This is an exercise-intensive course designed to “unstick” writers struggling to start or continue new projects, boosting writing productivity. The course relies heavily on in-class writing exercises for both fiction and nonfiction writers. Writers will produce a ton of new pages.
We will read the works of great authors such as Venita Blackburn, Lydia Davis, Sandra Cisneros, Jamaica Kincaid, and Lucia Berlin, to discover what captivates and arrests our attention, and what resonates with readers long after the last line is read. After discussing these examples, the class will be given a series of writing prompts. Come ready to write! Students will produce writing to start a new story or find fresh avenues into a work in progress. You will receive in-class feedback from the instructor and your classmates. This class is for writers of all levels looking for inspiration and motivation.
The class will meet on Zoom on Thursday evenings from February 5 to March 19. There will be no class on March 5.
We have a limited number of scholarships for the class. Scholarships cover 50% of tuition. Recipients will be selected at random. The window to apply for a scholarship is open now through January 14. You can request one here.
