The next lecture in our 2025 Lecture Series takes place Saturday, March 15, from 4-5:15pm ET with Lin King, author of OS #312, “Yellowpeople.” Lin will be lecturing on unconventional narrative forms.
Shaping, Styling, Scaffolding: Using Form as a Narrative Tool
Unusual narrative forms are sometimes dismissed as flashy “gimmicks” used to conceal a lack of substance. Yet from the 18th-century epistolary novel to Jennifer Egan’s PowerPoint slides, fiction writers have always experimented with unconventional frameworks through which to tell stories. What stories benefit from which forms and why? When drafting and editing, how does a writer know whether formal experimentation is “justified” or merely a “crutch” that should be removed before the final draft? Works to be discussed may include: “How to Be an Other Woman” by Lorrie Moore, “Parents’ Morning Epiphany” by Zadie Smith, Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu, Time’s Arrow by Martin Amis, and Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-zi.
