Join One Story author Yohanca Delgado and follow one of literature’s most iconic unreliable narrators back to Manderley, the setting of Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel Rebecca.
Du Maurier’s gothic masterpiece is a game of unfolding secrets that begs to be discussed. Students will gather for lectures and discussions—without spoilers!—about what they’ve learned about the mysterious estate and its enigmatic inhabitants.
Students will study the novel’s craft elements (and how they may have inspired contemporary narratives in literature, TV, and film) and its place in the gothic tradition. Conversations will delve into du Maurier’s work on atmosphere, point of view, ghosts, and doubles, and the elements of suspense that fuel the novel’s propulsive momentum.
Classes will meet once a week for live Zoom sessions. Reading group sessions will be recorded. Students will need a copy of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier to take the course.
