The second lecture in our 2026 Lecture Series takes place Saturday, April 18, from 4-5:15pm ET with Chris Vanjonack, author of OS #249, “Phases.” Chris will be lecturing on how to fit a compelling narrative into flash fiction.
Connecting Narrative Threads: Building Resonance in Flash Fiction
If you’ve ever attempted to write a piece of flash fiction, you know that it can be just as hard—if not at times even harder—as writing a short story of traditional length. Even more difficult: lacing that brief narrative with enough resonance and narrative threads to make your readers feel like they’ve just devoured a much longer work. In this craft seminar that combines lecture and group discussion, we’ll be digging into George Saunders’ 1995 flash story, “Sticks,” to examine and emulate the strategies he uses to pack an ocean of resonance and complexity into just 392 words.
This is part of our 2026 Lecture Series. You can purchase the entire series by going here.
